In the 1960s the face of South Brown Street appeared like this, according to this photo by George Feldman. The stores were Hildebrand Furniture, Gamble Store, Hodag Drug Store and Gilley's Bar, with the Wisconsin State Employment agency office on the second floor over two of the stores. The Hildebrand store sustained considerable damage and the other stores shown were wiped out in a major fire which claimed five business places in December 1968.

The two current buildings that now hold Peggy's Emporium and Emporium Plus bedding are landmarks in the Rhinelander area. The two pictures where clipped from the newspaper. The building to the left is the current Peggy's Emporium furniture store in the Downtown. The picture below is of the Emporium Plus bedding location on Courtney Street.
In the 1920s this building along the Chicago and North Western railroad right of way in downtown Rhinelander housed Transpara Inc., which processed rolls of paper produced at the Rhinelander Paper Company. Later this work was transferred to the former Rhinelander Refrigerator Company plant on the south side of the city. Now this work is preformed in the paper company plant.
